“Gabriële was the brains behind Picabia,” said George Baker, the chair of the art history department at UCLA and the author of “The Artwork Caught by the Tail,” about Picabia’s life and work. “When they first met, she was a deeply avant-garde figure — her music was advanced. His painting was kind of retrograde, a little out of fashion. I think because of their relationship, he radicalized his art.”
