Register to attend the UCLA Art History Graduate Student Symposium

The 58th Annual UCLA Department of Art History Graduate Student Symposium will be held on Friday, October 27 in the Nimoy Studio at the Hammer Museum.

Entitled In/On/Across Bodies of Water, this conference explores bodies of water – oceans, seas, straights, gulfs, bays, lakes, rivers, and even puddles and ponds – that contain multiple dimensions of histories, cultures, and topographies of the world. Raw materials, finished products, and people who performed labor moved long distances across bodies of water. Rulers and the elite traveled across bodies of water and commissioned stories and images of their journeys across the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans. The navy was used to explore, conquer, and display wealth. The expanse of water immediately confronts the daily lives of people living by coastal and river fronts.
