Professor Lothar von Falkenhausen to present Distinguished Opening Lecture “What the Stone Faces Tell Us” on May 25

Professor Lothar von Falkenhausen will present Distinguished Opening Lecture “What the Stone Faces Tell Us” on May 25:
“Join renowned UCLA archaeologist Dr. Lothar von Falkenhausen as he reveals the fascinating stories behind mysterious stone carvings from ancient China. Discover how these ancient faces shed light on a lost civilization and what they still teach us today.
The excavations at the late prehistoric site of Shimao in northern Shaanxi (ca. 2200-1800 BCE) have brought to light a number of large carved-stone reliefs showing human and animal motifs. Their style and execution show striking parallels with decoration of the famous bronzes from the Shang dynasty (ca. 1500-1046 BCE), forcing us to reconsider previous ideas about the origins and cultural or religious meanings of the motifs. This lecture will present some of the new evidence and place it in its wider art-historical context.”
