Professor Kersey Awarded 2023 Millard Meiss Publication Grant

Professor Kristopher Kersey’s book, Facing Images: Problems of Modernity in Japanese Art, has been selected as one of the 2023 Millard Meiss Publication Grant recipients.

Twice a year, CAA awards grants through the Millard Meiss Publication Fundto support book-length scholarly manuscripts in the history of art, visual studies, and related subjects that have been accepted by a publisher on their merits, but cannot be published in the most desirable form without a subsidy.

His book, now awaiting publication, sets forth a critique of global modernity by focusing on issues such as montage, interface theory, collage, and semiotics in the secular and Buddhist manuscripts of twelfth century Japan. Various articles and chapters have addressed theory and historiography, the encounter with Europe ca. 1600, the modern trope of impermanence, death and manuscript culture ca. 1200, the figural aspects of poetic language, and the archival anxieties of the Anthropocene.
