Anthony Vidler, known affectionately as “Tony” to everyone who knew him, served as Professor and Chair of the Art History Dept at UCLA beginning in 1993, and held a joint appointment in the School of Architecture from 1997 until he departed UCLA in 2002. He went on to serve as Dean of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union in New York. Tony will always be remembered as a dynamic Chair and intellectual leader, who ushered in an exciting period of transformation and growth in the Department. Through his teaching, scholarship, and leadership, Tony made an enormous impact at UCLA and the profession at large, and the Department joins the multitudes whose lives he touched in mourning his loss.
