DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Department of Art History proudly presents the 2024 Patricia McCarron McGinn Lecture\, featuring Charlene Villaseñor Black\, Art History Professor and Faculty Chair of the Chicana/o and Central American Studies. \nProfessor Charlene Villaseñor Black will be delivering a lecture entitled\, “Art against Necropolitics”: \nCan art act in the face of violence? Beginning in the 1990s\, feminist activists and visual artists joined forces to protest feminicide (feminicidio)\, the targeted murders of women and girls\, along the US-Mexico border. Mexican American (Chicana) artist Judithe Hernández produced her moving Juárez series in response. This talk focuses on Hernández’s work\, analyzing her use of rhetorics of memorialization\, including pictorial echoes of Catholic saints and deliberate invocations of indigeneity\, to honor these victims of violence. While situated within the specific locale of the US-Mexico border\, Hernández’s images are also in dialogue with anti-feminicide activism around the globe. SUMMARY:March 30 symposium to explore what we don’t talk about when we talk about hate
DESCRIPTION:This event which is sponsored by the UCLA Department of English\, will propose that a range of disciplines across the humanities have shared and suggestive investments in questions of hatred. We will explore hatred as a human emotion not as it is simply decried or enabled in particular works of art\, but as it is in different ways put to use. In particular\, we will explore the uses of hatred in criticism: of art\, literature and culture. The day will bring together scholars and critics in literature and the visual arts\, who are also invested in a range of disciplines including psychoanalysis\, queer theory\, philosophy and anthropology\, in order to discuss hatred in\, and the hatred of\, a range of creative media. \nEach presentation will be followed by discussion with the audience\, and the day will end with a final roundtable reflection on hatred and the humanities. \nRegister here to attend the symposium. \nFor any questions\, please direct these to David Russell (djrussell@ucla.edu) or Sarah Kareem (kareem@humnet.ucla.edu).
