SUMMARY:UCLA Department of Art History Graduate Symposium\, Fri. Nov. 13
DESCRIPTION:This year’s annual UCLA Department of Art History Graduate Symposium will be held at the Hammer Museum’s Nimoy Studio on Friday\, November 13\, 2026. This year’s theme is Bodies Under Duress: Violence\, Pressure\, and the Visual. \nAcross art and visual culture\, bodies have served as both the objects upon which power is exercised and the means through which its effects become visible\, imaginable\, and contested. Bodies Under Duress invites scholars to consider how visual and material practices register the forces exerted upon bodies\, while also asking not only what happens to bodies under violence\, but how violence is made possible\, legitimized\, enacted\, and remembered or forgotten.  We are honored to welcome Meredith Gamer\, Associate Professor of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University\, as our keynote speaker. Specializing in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British art\, her research explores the intersections of visual culture\, violence\, punishment\, and power. Her recent book\, City of the Gallows: Art and Execution in Eighteenth-Century London (2026)\, examines the relationship between art and public execution. \n\n\nThe symposium is open to the public and all are welcome to attend!\n\n\nKindly RSVP here

SUMMARY:Art Council Lecture Series – Abbey Stockstill
DESCRIPTION:Abbey Stockstill\, Associate Professor and Thomas Jefferson Foundation Chair\, in the Department of Architectural History\, at the University of Virginia will be presenting a UCLA Art Council Lecture Series presentation entitled “None Like It in Islam”: Material Aesthetics Between Andalusi Production and Maghrib Patronage \nDescription:\nTo look at the art of medieval North Africa is to enter a scene in which familiar motifs\, transformed by material and arrangement\, compose a new visual world. \nAn artistic explosion occurred in the twelfth-century Mediterranean\, as emergent dynasties from the western extremes of the region brought together new avenues of material exchange\, craftsmanship\, and ideologies. Despite this wave of production\, modern scholarship has struggled to articulate the impact of this period\, falling back on outmoded tropes of artistic “influence” and equating ornamental expense with quality. This talk explores how this dynamic has obscured the real innovation of the period\, and argues for a more subtle\, intermedial aesthetic vision.

SUMMARY:UCLA Department of Art History Colloquium with Susan Dackerman\, May 6
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a Department of Art History Colloquium with featured speaker Susan Dackerman on Wednesday\, May 6 at 1 PM in Dodd 275 for her talk\, The Paleontology of Print: Lithographic Limestone and the Nature of Reproducibility.  \nSummary: When in 1796\, the Munich playwright Alois Senefelder developed a method of printing from the surface of the local Bavarian limestone\, he was utilizing a material that had been reproducing indexical images for millions of years. The Jurassic-era limestone slabs were riddled with fossilized flora and fauna. The same year as Senefelder’s invention\, from study of the same Bavarian limestone\, the French naturalist Georges Cuvier recognized that some fossils in the stone were petrifications of species that were no longer extant\, establishing the idea of extinction. Prior to Cuvier\, fossils were imagined to be images made by Nature itself. Senefelder’s use of the local limestone was preceded by the stone’s use by regional sculptors such as Hans Daucher\, who around 1500 turned from marble to the native limestone because the characteristics of the stone suited precision carving. Many of the fossil-laden stone sculptures subsequently were used as templates to cast bronze copies\, conceptually replicating the stone’s capacity to cast fossils. Nearly 300 years later\, the stone’s generative potential again was exploited to make printed multiples known as lithographs. My paper imagines how examining the history of early modern sculpture and prints alongside the history of paleontology enables us to see how Nature\, and the contemporaneous historical theories that explicate it\, have informed the work of artists\, as well as shaped the history of print and replication. \nAll are welcome!

DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be held virtually in Dr. Nina Horisaki-Christens’ AH C170A course.  All are welcome to attend! \nRecolonizing the Museum and the GLAM-work of AI\nThis talk addresses the partnerships forged between the GLAM sector and the tech industry\, which have been an essential component of AI’s development\, particularly in the field of computer vision. It argues that this partnership reprises the colonialist origins of the Euro-American museum for the modern global economy.

SUMMARY:Walter Hopps Colloquium with Jennifer Sichel\, November 17\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Please save the date for the next Hopps Colloquium. It will be a lecture and book event\, celebrating the publication of Jennifer Sichel’s new book from University of Chicago Press\, in the Abakanowicz Arts and Culture Collection series: Criticism Without Authority: Gene Swenson’s and Jill Johnston’s Queer Practices (2025). \nThe Walter Hopps Colloquium\, an ongoing series of lectures and discussions in modern and contemporary art\, funded in part via the Hopps Chair\, will begin with a lecture on artist Edward Keinholz\, with whom Hopps founded the Ferus Gallery in 1957. \nThis fall quarter\, the colloquia will run alongside Professor George Baker’s graduate seminar AH232 Contemporary Art\, which proposes to reexamine and open up LA art history in the 1960s and 70s by thinking it through global and other networks. \nJennifer Sichel\nUniversity of Louisville \nIn the 1960s\, Gene Swenson and Jill Johnston transformed art criticism into something much more expansive and unruly. Incorporating elements of poetry\, performance\, and protest\, they developed idiosyncratic practices that forged new ground\, politically and aesthetically. These critics were deeply enmeshed in New York’s avant-garde art scene\, and both were explicitly and unapologetically queer. This lecture and discussion will trace how Swenson and Johnston changed the course of artmaking as they refused norms of disciplined writing and authoritative voice. \nA graduate of Williams College and the University of Chicago art history programs\, Jennifer Sichel is Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art and Theory at the University of Louisville’s Hite Institute of Art and Design\, and affiliated faculty in the Department of Interdisciplinary and Comparative Humanities. A scholar of 20th and 21st-century art history\, she focuses on practices that fall outside traditional genres of artmaking and develops methodologies in careful dialogue with queer and affect theory. Her book\, Criticism without Authority: Gene Swenson’s and Jill Johnston’s Queer Practices (University of Chicago Press\, 2025)\, traces how Swenson and Johnston reinvented criticism as a capacious practice by rejecting modernist appeals to purity and coherence. They devised new ways not only to describe experiments in art and performance\, but also to enact new queer sensibilities. At the same time\, they often failed to effect change or to see a bigger picture beyond their own triumphs and struggles. Criticism Without Authority makes their work visible not just as criticism\, but as its own form of art. \nSichel has published scholarly and critical writing in Selva: A Journal of the History of Art\, The Oxford Art Journal\, Sculpture Journal\, as well as in exhibition catalogues for museums including The Whitney Museum\, The Jewish Museum\, Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien\, and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. She is the author of “‘Do You Think Pop Art’s Queer?’ Gene Swenson and Andy Warhol” —a key queer intervention that changed art history’s understanding of Warhol’s practice through archival recovery\, and established Swenson’s importance as a queer writer and artist. Her research has been supported by fellowships from the Clark Art Institute\, Smithsonian Archives of American Art\, Terra Foundation for American Art\, and Humanities Division at the University of Chicago. \nReception to follow in the Art History and Classics Faculty Lounge.
